Neil Postman wrote a very dry content book. Seriously, I've heard of deserts with more water. However, that's not the point. Yeah, he wrote a book. I had to read the book....well, me and 14-ish other people. The dry book was about how technology is the black inkstain on humanity.
Moving on.
The book was called Technopoly, for those who are interestred.
I almost cried from the lack of engaging content in this book.
Although the author brings up a very valid point, that's where it all ends. He makes all 11 chapters about the same basic thing: Technology really blows and we should get rid of it. Forgive the crude little summary, but I'm not going to indulge you in a full blown summary.
That's just the crude basic of my distaste. Let me indulge you in a deeper hatred.
I would like to begin by saying that Mr. Postman has a lot of very good points. Humanity has become dependant on technologies and it's slowly crippling our abilities to be physically fit, functional pieces of hte natural world. Face it, he's right. If it weren't for this silly little blog, for example, I would have no means to communicate to you all beyond using a phone. However, I would probably not want to communicate this to you otherwise, seeing as there is a 1% chance I don't know who you are.
However, the way he presents his argument is incredibly mind numbing in its lack of entertaining content. I think the only thing I found to be entertaining was a vivid desproption of Jesus, a desert, some wine, and a commercial on television.
I wouldn't say one should place this book into the nearest fireplace once they get a copy from Aunt Martha for Christmas. Not only would you upset Aunt Martha, your parents, and the people who spent their time making that specific copy, but it's great if you're into that kind of stuff.
I've run out of things to say about Postman.
Adios.
